The Varsity Trip was founded in 1922, two years before the inaugural Winter Olympics, to host a Varsity competition between the Oxford and Cambridge Ski Clubs (now OUSSC and CUSSC). Since then it has gone on to become the oldest student ski- and snowboard-trip in the world, and the largest organised by full-time students. Approaching their 90th anniversary in 2012, the races are still a central focus of the Trip, and the results are eagerly-awaited by members of both universities.
Until recently the trip was aimed primarily at experienced skiers and racers, with a correspondingly small number of participants attending. In recent years the trip has increasingly catered for less hardcore skiers; in 2010 30% of all skiers were complete beginners.
| Year | Destination | Number of participants |
|---|---|---|
| 2005 | Tignes | 960 |
| 2006 | Les Deux Alpes | 1,000 |
| 2007 | Val Thorens | 1,700 |
| 2008 | Val Thorens | 2,000 |
| 2009 | Tignes | 2,400 |
| 2010 | Val Thorens | 2,500 |
| 2011 | Val Thorens | 3,200 |
As a result of this evolution, the quality of the evening and aprés-ski events has increaed dramatically. The Final Night Party has grown in size every year since 2008, with over 90% of the participants attending; recent headline acts have included Chase & Status, Pendulum, Calvin Harris and Jack Beats. In recent years the evening events have been in increasingly high demand, and regularly sell out before the start of the trip.
Snowboarding is a relatively recent addition to the Varsity Trip experience, but is now fully integrated into the events calendar. The 2009 and 2010 trips featured both Skier- and Boarder-X events, mixed Freestyle competitions, and boarders integrated into Cuppers teams. Boarders are also fully-catered for in the Trip's discounted equipment hire and lesson classes.
